Description

The Shoshazan Engyo-ji temple is on top of Mount Shosha, a bit secluded from Himeji City. It was founded by Shoku Shonin in 966 and belongs to the Tendai sect of the Heian Buddism. It is stop number 27 on the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage trail. On the image you see the Lecture Hall (Dai-ko-do) of the Mitsu-no-do. Emperor Kazan, who himself entered the Buddhist priesthood, requested the construction of the great hall in 986 (Kanna 2nd yr), and bestowed the name Engyo-ji.

The Dai-ko-do is Important Cultural Property of Japan. The adjoining buildings got destroyed in 1331 by lightning stroke and were rebuild. The lecture hall itself got dismantled and rebuilt from 1951 to 1956 - which is the main reason it is not listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Not many people find the way to Shoshazan due to its offside location. It is a wonderful place with great atmosphere. After visiting busy Himeji Castle, its the perfect spot for relaxing your soul. The forest is perfect for Shinrin-Yoku. Don't miss that gorgeous mystic sanctum.
